PERTICAIA In the archaic language of central Italy “Perticaia” means the plough, an implement symbolic of agricoltural activity. The plough marked the passage from anima herding to agriculture. Creating roots in a territory. The “PERTICAIA ESTATE” began making wine in the year 2000, when Guido Guardigli, after many years of experience as director of winemaking estates in Tuscana and Umbria, decided to become a proprietor. The choice of the territory could not have been another. “MONTEFALCO”, an area already known for the great potential and personality of the local grape variety “SAGRANTINO” was choses. The farm was originally about 20 hectares of which 2.5were olives trees and 1.5 were vineyard. This has now been transformed by the planting of 14 hectares of vineyards and the building of a modern winemaking cellar. The wines are afed in small barrels of French oak, in barriques or in tonneaux, in the 18th century Cellar under the proprietor’s home in the small medieval village, Gualdo Cattaneo. The vines are all planted on a hillside with a gentle slope and are at 300 to 350 metres above sea level. The vineyards is facing predominanthly South West. The soil is of a medium consistency with the presence of stones which favour good water drainage. These are all indispensable elements for obtaining a grape of excellent quality. As of present the estate is divided as follows:

  • 7 hectares of “Montefalco Sagrantino”, 100% vines of the grape variety Sagrantino;
  • 8 hectares of “Montefalco Rosso”, 60% vines of the grape variety Sangiovese, 15% Sagrantino grape, 25% Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Colorino;
  • 1 hectares of Trebbiano Spoletino.
  • 2.5 hectares of Olive Grove.
The wines are grown on a low cordon trained and spur-pruned system. The plant density is 5,500 plants per hectare with limits the grape production to 7/8 bunches per vine and produces a wel mature and balanced grape. The grape yield per hectare is about 60-70 quintals. "PERTICAIA" has been on the market since 2003. The company has been fully functional in grape production since 2007 and will have all its products on the market by 2008.
